Introduction
In the spirit of Halloween, we are taking a look at a local house that some will call haunted, and others will call cursed. The so-called “Sunder House,” named by the Rockbridge locals, has been rumored to be a hotspot for paranormal activity for many years in the county according to those who live near. The house has been visited by a number of paranormal experts and ghost hunters, all trying to
The house was also the host to a particularly disturbing quadruple murder back in 2003. The Kershaw Family Massacre is unfortunately still unsolved to this day. Due to this crime this iconic brick home is also darkly referred to as the “Shenandoah Butcher House.”
The house was popular in the 1970’s during the horror craze that was sweeping the nation when stories of it’s “hauntings” spread around the county. Many people who visited the house would state that they would see and hear things they couldn’t explain, and had the feeling they were being watched by something. During this time the Sunder House would even host Halloween parties, where neighbors and curious townsfolk could walk the dark house and see for themselves if they could make contact with whatever spirits or entities lurked inside.
The Sunder House has been apparently vacant for some years now, but stories and rumors still float around the county. The people say that the house is cursed, and that the house will claim lives of anyone who lives inside for long. There are accounts of numerous families who have lost loved ones within the house, with this story of course climaxing with the quadruple murders of the Kershaws. Some people say it’s the house itself killing those within!
Whatever is the reason behind all the unusual events that have taken place in the house, it certainly makes for an interesting local story.
